Kayla Roberts (Class of 2024): Gap Year Growth

Featured

Kayla Roberts

On Thursday 23rd April we were treated to an insightful presentation by Former Pupil, Kayla Roberts, (Class of 2024) who shared her journey from a transformative gap year to studying Medicine at the University of Cambridge. Her message was clear: success is as much about personal growth as it is about academic achievement.

Kayla spoke passionately about the value of a gap year, noting that it fosters maturity, resilience and independence. Whether gaining life experience or meeting new people globally, she highlighted it as a rare opportunity to break from formal education before a long degree. While she acknowledged challenges, such as the discipline needed to return to studying, she recommended a one month 'buffer' to shift your mentality before university begins. Transitioning to Cambridge, Kayla provided a candid look at medical school. She emphasised unique benefits like dissection and the supervision system, which offers high-quality, small-group teaching. Despite the high workload and science-heavy curriculum, she expressed a deep love for the college system, which provides a supportive, 'home-like' social environment. We are incredibly grateful to Kayla for her time and for providing such an informative roadmap for our aspiring medics and world travelers!
