Former Pupil on Humanitarian Visit to Gaza

Former pupil Mohammed Mustafa left Yarm in 2008 and is currently an emergency doctor volunteering in Gaza with PANZMA (Palestinian Australian New Zealand Medical Association).

Mohammed was born in Mecca, Saudi Arabia to parents who were both refugees from the Gaza strip and moved to Jordan to live with his grandparents until age four when he moved to the UK.

Mohammed joined Yarm in 2005 and enjoyed playing rugby whilst at school, eventually going on to represent England students whilst studying medicine at Glasgow. Mohammed relocated to Australia and is an emergency doctor in Perth.

Driven by his desire to make the world a better place, Mohammed has used his skills to volunteer. After conflict broke out between Gaza and Israel, Mohammed decided he had to help and volunteered to go to Gaza first in 2024 and now again in 2025.

PANZMA is non-profit organisation that provides medical relief and support to Palestinians in need. The organisation was set up by a small group of Palestinian healthcare professionals working in Australia and New Zealand, with Mohammed also being involved from day one. The organisation is accredited by the World Health Organization and the aim is for PANZMA to grow similar to MSF (Doctors without Borders).

Mohammed arrived on his latest humanitarian visit to Gaza mid march, just before the ceasefire broke. What was originally a mission to deliver primary care, something that has been neglected due to the conflict, turned into emergency care for mass casualty events. He has documented his harrowing experience as an emergency medic on his Instagram account and has been speaking to news channels to raise awareness of the medical situation and lack of supplies.

Mohammed kindly spoke to Mr Edwards via Zoom to give a glimpse of his motivations behind volunteering and the challenges he is facing. Please note this video contains content that may be distressing or triggering for some viewers:
